Northwestern Oklahoma State University, often abbreviated NWOSU, is a state-assisted, public, regional institution of higher learning located in Alva, Oklahoma. Its main campus spans over 360 acres. Northwestern Oklahoma State University offers more than 40 areas of study to earn a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree. It also offers complete master’s degree programs in American Studies, education, and counseling psychology. A doctoral program in advanced nursing practice is also scheduled to start. The programs are offered through two schools of education: The School of Professional Studies and the School of Arts and Sciences.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University was founded in 1897 as Northwestern Territorial Normal School. It was the second normal school is the state and focused on training teachers to serve in one-room schoolhouses in the nearby areas. In 1919, NWOSU because a four-year college and changed its name to Northwestern Oklahoma Teachers College. The school expanded to offers degrees in education and liberal arts and became Northwestern State College in 1939. Today, Northwestern Oklahoma State University is home to nearly 2,500 students from 62 counties in Oklahoma, 38 states, and 21 countries.
